Thailand is known for the land rich in delicious food and nature. I bet Papaya Salad may be many readers’ favorite here, but besides those dishes, Thai fruits are also a must-try. Thailand is a country in the tropical zone, so it’s easy to grow fruits and harvest throughout the year, which is doubtless why the price is cheap compared to the imported ones into your country. Once you are in Thailand, I would like to recommend five local fruits that you must try as follows :
- Durian (100 – 300 baht per kilogram)
It is a green fruit with spikes all over its skin, nicknamed as “the King of Fruits” due to its
spiky looks like a king’s crown. Although its appearance is scary and its smell is a bit strong, trust me, its meat is super duper delicious. You will taste the mellow sweetness and smooth texture. Many desserts use Durian as a main ingredient such as Durian Sticky Rice.
- Mango (20 – 90 baht per kilogram)
I’m quite sure that you all know mango already, but have you known that mango can be eaten both raw (green) and ripe (yellow)?. Eating it raw will give the sour taste, making you wide-awake during a sleepy day. While the ripe ones are eaten for its sweetness, especially with Thai sticky rice as its best match.
- Mangosteen (20 – 90 baht per kilogram)
Although the name is similar to mango but It isn’t another type of mango. It is different
fruit. The fruit is also nicknamed “the Queen of Fruits” due to its lovely pyramidal crown on top. Among other Thai local fruits, mangosteen is the no.1 because of the sweet-sour taste with the tenderness in every bite. You’ll never get bored of eating it !
- Rambutan (20 – 90 baht per kilogram)
You may be curious how on earth a fruit has hairs on it. Besides its weird appearance,
inside of it appears the white sparkly meat that is juicy while super soft. If you don’t feel like peeling its weird skin, you can buy a canned one soaked in yummy syrup.
- Guava (20 – 90 baht per kilogram)
It is another green fruit with white skin inside. If you prefer sweetness and sourness at a
low degree, guava is recommended for you with 5 times higher in vitamin C than orange. However, some think that the fruit taste is a bit plain and eat it with either ground red chili + salt or pink plum powder which can intensify its flavor well.
Those fruits are quite common in the market and can be bought throughout the year. You can buy them everywhere from local markets or department stores. The fruits are often sold per piece or kilogram. Their prices fluctuate seasonally, depending on the quality and demand & supply in the market.
I hope the fruits may make you want to visit Thailand and taste them now. However, before coming to taste it, you must purchase travel insurance to meet the requirements of Thailand Pass. Therefore, I suggest you buy travel insurance from Tune by AirAsia of Rabbits Care to cover up to US $100,000 medical coverage when you have food poisoning, food allergy, and other sickness.
Welcome to Thailand and let’s enjoy without worrying about travel insurance from Tune by AirAsia !
